Politecnico di Milano won the first edition of the Leonardo Drone Contest, a competition organized by the Italian aerospace company Leonardo to promote the development of AI applied to unmanned aerial vehicles.
The first edition of the contest took place in Torino on September 17th to 18th, involving six major Italian universities: Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa, Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata and Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II.
The POLIMI team, led by the PhD student Gabriele Roggi under the supervision of Prof. Marco Lovera, was able to successfully tackle the challenge using a drone designed by ANT-X. The drone features several sensors and a powerful computer, enabling the usage of advanced autonomous guidance and navigation techniques. The drone was designed based on the stringent mission requirements imposed by the Contest, both in terms of endurance and of the sensor technology to be used.
Congratulations to the POLIMI team!
